Volunteer Opportunities
in Nepal!
The best way to really experience a culture to live
for some time within it. Nepal has many volunteer opportunities
doing all kinds of things, from environmental action
to handicraft design to teaching. The experience is
incredibly rewarding and should never be expensive,
unlike many groups, which charge you a premium to volunteer
your time! Here are some volunteer activities.
Orphanage Assistance
Every year, hundreds of children leave their poor villages
and travel to cities in search of work. These children
are deprived of many opportunities necessary for their
development. After coming to cities, most of them work
as child laborers in restaurants, 4hotels, and factories.
Through education and compassion children are empowered
to challenge a life of further poverty and exploitation.
Volunteers focus on educational training, which consists
primarily of English language classes. Besides teaching,
the orphanages operate several creative programs. Volunteers'
active participation in programs such as health education,
games, drawing and painting is encouraged. With such
a variety, the orphanage encourages volunteers to explore
a meaningful approach to service.
English Teaching
Volunteers help shape young lives in Nepal by sharing
their English skills and teaching talents. They teach
English to elementary school children ranging in age
from 6-13 years. Many schools lack the funds to provide
effective English language training. Native or fluent
English speakers with or without formal teaching experience
can contribute greatly to a child’s educational
development. Most schools in Nepal follow fixed courses
for teaching English. Volunteers teach school courses
in collaboration with local English teachers. Volunteers
are also encouraged to coordinate additional activities
such as games, painting, and health education. Volunteers
typically teach 2-3 hours a day for six days a week.
Environmental
Conservation
Environmental degradation is a significant concern in
Nepal. Problems such as loss of bio-diversity, deforestation,
soil erosion, and environmental pollution threaten human
survival. Environmental conservation projects address
these issues directly through community education and
collaboration and hands-on conservation work. Volunteers
participate in programs to develop medicinal plants,
support local farmers with crop development and seed
distribution, assist in erosion control planting efforts,
or maintain local nurseries. These simple village-based
nurseries produce seedlings used to support reforestation
efforts through the establishment of community and private
forests. All products produced in the nurseries go directly
to the local people. Volunteers may work with local
villagers or other volunteers in activities such as
sowing, mulching, watering, weeding, and farming.
Health Care Volunteer
in Nepal
A lack of health care education, medical services and
resources in Nepal have lead to much unnecessary suffering.
In Nepal, there is an average of one doctor for every
12,612 Nepalese. Without adequate time and resources,
local doctors are unable to effectively treat all of
their patients. Volunteers for health care projects
assist local doctors and medical staff with the treatment
of patients. Volunteers are also involved in other hospital
activities such as record keeping, sanitation, nutrition,
and patient education. Volunteers interested in Health
Care programs must currently be a doctor, nurse, medical
student, or hospital employee and must demonstrate an
appropriate level of training and experience in the
medical field.
Handicraft Design
Anyone with prior experience in handicrafts,
textiles, wood-working, felting, embroidery, graphic
or product design, clothing design, paper-making, book-binding,
beading, jewelry, fine arts or the marketing of such
items is desperately needed. You can help to design
new handicrafts and offer valuable insight into western
styles and trends. Seeking fierce trendsetters!
Volunteer Camp
Volunteers can choose to attend one of several short-term
volunteer camps. Through physical or technical work,
volunteers contribute to many projects that directly
aid local communities. The camps last two to three weeks
and volunteers are expected to work 20 to 30 hours a
week. Volunteers will work together with other volunteers
from around the world on projects that include reforestation,
hospital or school construction/renovation, village
renewal projects, sustainable eco-tourism, or wildlife
and environmental projects.

ACTIVITIES
School Renovation
Projects
In many areas, schooling opportunities do not exist
for children because of lack of funding and resources
to renovate schools ravaged by the weather and years
of neglect. The school renovation project is a 21 day
project that begins on the 1st of each month. International
volunteers will work and stay together to renovate or
expand physical infrastructure of an existing school.
Puma Village Community
Development
Volunteers will work and stay together in the beautiful
village of Puma. Puma is located in the mountain region.
The project work could include building construction
or park and trail construction, all of which support
sustainable tourism for the villagers of Puma.
Considerations
Volunteering isn't for everyone. Volunteering in Nepal
requires flexibility and patience. Individuals should
be self-starters, who genuinely respect the Nepali people
and their culture. Volunteers go to Nepal to share their
time and energy with the people, to experience the Nepali
culture first hand, and to grow as citizens of the planet.
Before you apply,
please consider the following:
- Can you camp?
- Can you live without modern plumbing,
hot water and electricity?
- Are you aware that most volunteers
experience illness at some point during their stay?
- Are you open enough to accept and
respect a culture no matter how different it is
from your first culture?
- Are you comfortable with yourself?
At times you may feel isolated, particularly when
you arrive in a village knowing no one.
- Are you hungry to learn? You'll learn
a new language, a new culture, a new way of life.
- Can you handle culture shock? The
moment you step off the plane you will be in a world
where very little is familiar.
- Are you flexible? Developing countries,
and Nepal in particular, are not as obsessed with
time as the US or Europe. Often, schedules are ignored
or appointments begin later than arranged. You may
also encounter corruption in government officials
and local administrators.
- If you decide to volunteer in Nepal,
you are opening the door to the possibility for
a personally enriching and life-changing experience.
